Designs by Laska is the creative work of Laska Nerysoo, a proud Gwich'in artist born and raised between Inuvik and Aklavik in the Northwest Territories. Deeply rooted in Gwich'in traditions and family teachings, Laska creates meaningful, handcrafted pieces that reflect northern identity, memory, and connection to the land.
After leaving the North to study at the Interior Academy in Kamloops, BC, Laska graduated with honours and earned a diploma in Esthetics. She later returned home to the Western Arctic, where her focus shifted toward family and the creative arts that have long been part of her life. As a mother of two boys with a strong connection to their Gwich'in and Inuvialuit heritage, she draws inspiration from the everyday moments, strength, and beauty found in northern family life.
Laska's passion for beading and design was nurtured over time by the women in her family, who shared inspiration and traditional skillsets across generations. Many of her creations are made from a place of reflection and healing, carrying subtle personal messages about emotion, love, and respect for the land. Her work often feels like a return to childhood memories spent in her mother's craft room, brought to life through rich textures, careful detail, and a deep sense of home.
Through her art, Laska also supports Indigenous empowerment, standing firmly in the belief that Indigenous artists should be proud of who they are and fully visible in every creative space.
Designs by Laska reflects the strength of northern family ties and the enduring influence of culture passed down through generations. Each item is created with intention, blending traditional inspiration with personal storytelling and craftsmanship shaped by life in the Delta.
